Unit 3 challenges students to discover what it means to be a survivor. As this unit 3 progresses, students will determine how can people change when faced with survival situations? Next, they will answers questions like what does it mean to follow your instincts? Or what does it mean to be a leader? Finally, how can collaboration support survival? These and many other concepts that support unit 3 My Survivor Self. In Call of the Wild, Buck teaches us that survival is about being adaptable. While this sometimes means being competitive and looking out for one’s self it can also involve looking out for one’s pack. In every instance, survival requires perseverance and a refusal to accept the status quo. This unit will allow teachers the opportunity to make strong, deep connections between the lessons that Buck teaches the reader and the adolescent world our students inhabit. It is highly recommended that teachers modify the informational texts in this unit to reflect current events and the interests of the communities their school serves.
